About intandem
intandem is a mentoring programme for children and young people experiencing the care system, or at risk of care. The majority of children and young people supported are living at home, or with family and friends in kinship care. Mentoring starts between the ages of 7 and 15 years and continues for as long as needed. Established in 2016, intandem is managed by Inspiring Scotland and delivered by 12 partner charities across 20 local authorities in Scotland.

Our why
Relationships change lives. They help support our mental health, encourage us to engage with education and activities, and build confidence and resilience.
With the right support at the right time each and every child can thrive. All of us struggle in rough waters. Things like illness, poverty, or the death of a loved one can make it harder for parents and carers to stay afloat and provide the care children and young people need.
intandem mentoring offers a scaffolding of support around children and young people when they need it most. It's strong and can flex to where and when it's needed.
“When children talk about wanting to be safe, they talk about having relationships that are real, loving and consistent. That must be the starting point...friendships and relationships with people in the workforce and wider community are important. These relationships may be where children find the love and care they need.”
The Promise
Our vision
With the right support, all children and young people can thrive and communities are strengthened. Our vision is that all young people who are experiencing the care system, or on the edge of care have the resilience and confidence to succeed in life.
We are committed to the pledges made in the Independent Care Review and are working hard to ensure we keep the promise made to all young people that by 2030 they will grow up loved, safe and respected.
Our partners and funders
intandem is funded by Scottish Government and several other funders including The Robertson Trust, and is managed by Inspiring Scotland.
intandem works alongside 12 partner charities to train and match volunteer mentors with children and young people. This community-based approach strengthens local communities by providing training and opportunities for volunteers to be part of young people’s lives. These are our partners:
